Art series exhibit at Fosston’s Aurora Center for the Arts — Presentations on Feb 28

Area Artist and Area Naturalist will present at the Sorenson Art Gallery at the Aurora Center for the Arts in Fosston on Wednesday, February 28.

"Inspired by Nature '' is the theme for a special gallery event featuring Artist Cindy Kolling, Gully and Native Prairie Botanist Donna Spaeth of Waubun. The event will feature Kolling's current exhibit featuring White Sage and the Rough Blazing Star plants, which are part of an ongoing series called "It's Not Nothing. Those aren't Weeds!"  The art exhibit and her discussion of prairie nature art will be accompanied by Spaeth's presentation of prairie ecosystems with plant samples.

This event will be held at the Sorenson Gallery in the Aurora Center for the Arts at 403 North Foss Avenue in Fosston. Daytime presentations will be held promptly from 12:30 pm to 1:10 pm, then 1:15 pm to 1:55 pm and 2 pm to 2:40 pm (to accommodate school student schedules) and a more relaxed, open session from 3:30 pm to 6 pm.

Several students are expected to attend the early session, but both are open to the public.  You can come and go as you need, or hang out and learn; the Fosston Library (same building) has pulled a selection of related books to browse and check out and there will be opportunity for questions and sharing.

The activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.

There is no charge to attend. Light refreshments will be served. This special event is sponsored by the Aurora Center for the Arts in Fosston.

Arts Advocate of the Year is Bonnie Stewart

Arts Advocate of the Year is Bonnie Stewart

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is excited to announce that Bonnie Stewart of Fosston was awarded the Northwest Arts Advocate of the Year Award.

Stewart has been a champion of the arts in Fosston since the early 1990s. She has served on the boards of the East Polk Heritage Center, the Pine to Prairie Folk School, and the Firefly Center for Art and Wellbeing. She was instrumental in establishing the City of Fosston’s Art and Culture Commission and continues to serve on it. She is the part-executive director for the Fosston Community Library and Arts Association. Through these positions and volunteering with other projects, she has led and initiated programming and education efforts, secured artwork for exhibition at the Sorenson Gallery and performing artists at the Fosston Community Library and Arts Center Theatre, written numerous grants and assisted area artists with grant writing. Bonnie’s tireless commitment to the arts has made a tremendous impact in our region.

Stewart left her professional career as a non-profit administrator over fifteen years ago and still consults with non-profit organizations on a part-time basis. Five years ago, she obtained a Master of Liberal Arts at Minnesota State University Moorhead. In addition to her non-profit work, Bonnie also owned and operated two retail businesses in Fosston – Nellie’s Attic and Good Things. She co-founded Sisters Sojourn in 2011, a two-day event held annually in Mentor, MN that featured women artists, entertainers, and speakers.

Other activities she enjoys are reading, writing, travel, and kayaking. She professes to be an “artist wannabe” and has dabbled in art that primarily includes watercolor and collage.

According to Fosston Artist Heidi Danos, “Bonnie has been instrumental in supporting the arts in Fosston and the surrounding area in countless ways. She’s been on boards, written numerous grants, been active in projects, and simply been a rock in our community. She isn’t afraid to serve in any capacity. Most recently, Bonnie has been a huge instrumental force in propelling a new project forward, the Firefly Center for Art & Wellbeing. The Center is partnering with Alluma to create a mixed-use space that will serve the community by providing accessible access to mental health with a creative twist.”

Stephenie Anderson said, “Bonnie has been a supporter of the Arts in Fosston for decades and is always willing to pitch in for the good of the community. I have known Bonnie to be a fantastic artist and arts advocate. Her quick wit, attention to detail, and loyalty to the art community have endeared her to the residents of Fosston. Bonnie has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to bring art and heritage to all the people in our community.”

About the impact of the arts Bonnie said, “I think they are one of the most important things that a person can experience. Art is essential to our wellbeing, to how we look at the world and other people. I’m so grateful we have these opportunities in Minnesota. The Legacy funding has been incredibly important. Art is life is my mantra.”

Bonnie’s advice to aspiring artists is, “Step out of that comfort zone and just do something. Take the class. Meet the other artist. Stretch your boundaries a bit. Seek information about something you are interested in. I’ve witnessed young artists who have been transformed by trying out their idea.”

This award was presented on Sunday, April 30 in Middle River at the Middle River Legacy Center. Three awards are given each year to recognize artists and arts advocates within our seven-county region who stand out in terms of artistry or volunteerism in the arts. More Drama Please! NWMAC Gallery Exhibit is open

More Drama Please!

Featuring Photos, Costumes, Props and More from Area Theater Groups

Northwest Minnesota Arts Council Gallery

NCTC in Thief River Falls October 4 - November 30

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) is pleased to announce our exhibit – More Drama Please! Open from October 4 through the end of November, this gallery exhibit features non-profit theater groups that work primarily with children in the NW Minnesota region. When you visit the exhibit you will find props, costumes, shoes, Paper-Mache creations, photos, playbills, advertising, and historical information. Many of the props and costumes are handmade and have been used in a variety of plays over the years.

The featured theater groups are Thief River Falls Area Community Theater, Middle River Community Theatre, and Fosston Community Theater. For this exhibit there are no pieces of art for sale.

TRFACT Director Jane Anderson said, “Since I am a full-time employee of the Thief River Falls ACT, theater is my working life. But it is also my non-working life. I live to create theater for the community, to educate children and adults on stage, and to bring joy and inspiration to those in the audiences. Bringing joy to others, makes me happy and whole.”

Kay Dell Super of the Middle River Community Theatre explained, “Directing children/students on stage has been a highlight of my life. Striving to implant teamwork, self-confidence, and compassion into children in today's world seems impossible at times with all the "outside noise of society" filling their minds and hearts. I feel drama is a great avenue for such qualities ... it forces them to focus and concentrate on the world around them. To combine two loves of children and theatre is a gift!”

The Fosston Community Library & Arts Association (FCLAA) Theater Program has been thriving for decades. Their Children's Summer Theater Program has run continuously since the mid-1980s. In 2019 "Mary Poppins, Jr." was performed with donated costumes by an anonymous patron. Included with the donation was a note stating that this dress, along with others, was made in the early 1900s. Director Abby Pearson shared, “Mary Poppins was a delight to costume and cast. Children in 3rd -12th grades were able to be a part of the ensemble. One of the Directors favorite parts of the show was creating the illusion of magic. It was so much fun for the students to brainstorm ways to make the illusion work. Students are involved in every aspect of the show to give them a well-rounded experience in theater.”

NWMAC Showcase Specialist Trey Everett said, "I love the enthusiasm of the theater directors. They are passionate about youth being involved in and experiencing the world of drama and acting. Many of the high-quality props and costumes in the exhibit are homemade and have been used throughout the years. The creativity of the directors, staff, youth, parents, costume designers, prop engineers, artists, and photographers is evident in this wonderful exhibit."

The NWMAC Gallery is located at Northland Community and Technical College, 1101 State Highway 1, Thief River Falls, MN 56701. The gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30-5 PM and at other times when events are held at the college. Enter through Door B. Visitor parking is free.
