New Sanford Medical Center Fargo
Seeks Local Art to Enhance Healing
FARGO, N.D. – Construction is well underway on the new Sanford Medical Center Fargo. In conjunction with this work, Sanford Health is initiating a Call for Artists (CFA). Sanford aims to enhance its healing environment by incorporating health care appropriate artwork, as it invests in the health and well-being of its patients and the communities it serves.
The CFA is open to artists residing in Sanford’s geographic footprint (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, portions of Montana, northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska) whose art meets the required criteria. Oland Arts Consulting, on behalf of Sanford Health, is seeking responses to this CFA and will assist in managing the art procurement for this project. Priority consideration will be given to artists residing in the region served by Sanford Medical Center Fargo. Both existing and commissioned artwork in a variety of mediums will be considered. Submissions for the project are due no later than Monday, Nov. 9, 2015.
“Local art can be a powerful tool in enhancing the patient experience,” said Roberta Young, chief nurse executive, Sanford Medical Center Fargo. “Integrating art into our building design is a vital part of completing the innovative process of creating a healing environment for patients, employees and visitors.”
The architecture and interior design of the new medical center will be representative of “The Sanford Look,” which is inspired by elements of collegiate gothic design. The artwork should enhance and harmonize with this design theme and interior finishes, as well as evoke positive feelings and themes. Research has shown that art can help reduce stress and offer the possibility of improved patient outcomes when art is health care appropriate. Traditional and contemporary styles of artwork will be considered equally, as will representational works and highly relatable symbolic works. Abstract works, aggressive styles, dark shadows and colors, stormy skies, somber and desolate landscapes or confrontational figurative images will not be accepted.
Construction for the Sanford Medical Center Fargo began in June 2013 and is slated to be complete in 2017. This $494 million, state-of-the-art building will give Fargo and the surrounding communities one million square feet of facilities focused on health and healing. The eleven floors will house 384 beds with specialties including Children’s, Heart, Women’s and others.
