THE GAIA FENNA MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP

Tofte Lake Center will host its sixth annual week-long residency for a Minnesota artist who exemplifies the spirit, passions, and values of artist and nature lover Gaia Fenna. This year’s residency week will be September 14-20, 2020.

For Gaia, physical activity and art were a means of self-expression, self-definition — in her DNA. At Tofte Lake Center, Gaia’s love of art and nature were perfectly combined. She took time each day to commune with her spirit by hiking, biking, and kayaking. She has left her creative fingerprints all over TLC.

INDIVIDUAL ARTIST & GROUP/ORGANIZATION

These residencies are offered for both individual artists, small creative teams, and groups or organizations looking for space and time to connect, create, and reflect together in community and in nature.

Artist residencies are interdisciplinary in nature, and balance group activity, personal work time, facilitated conversation, with the exchange of work and performance. Artists from diverse backgrounds and communities are encouraged to attend. Residencies are structured around the artists’ specific project needs. Days are self-directed, and could include individual/team work, afternoon excursions or on-site activity, dinners and evening gatherings with resident artists.

Tofte Lake Center is family-friendly. For Individual Residencies, artists are welcome to bring their families when space allows and when agreed upon in advance.  For these residencies child-care is not guaranteed, though assistance is offered to help resident artist parents find part-time childcare for their stay, should this make their residency possible.

2020 Individual Artist Residency Weeks Available: June 15-21 (depending on grant funding, this week could be dedicated to our Family Artists Residency Program), June 22-28, June 29-July 5, August 3-9, August 10-16, and September 21-27.

TLC offers residency and retreat opportunities for artistic groups or organizations looking for space and time to connect, create, strategize, plan, and reflect together in community.

If you are interested in hosting a Group or Organizational residency, please contact us at info@toftelake.org between October 1-November 30, 2019 – the earlier the better!

Lake of the Woods Artists’ Retreat

Come out to Laketrails Base Camp on Oak Island for a weekend of rest, relaxation, and art. This rustic island is the perfect getaway to rejuvenate and reconnect with your artistic projects and goals.

When: September 5-8, 2019

The Plan: The group will meet up in Warroad, MN, leaving at noon on Thursday, and carpool from there. When you get to Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle, you’ll take a boat out to Laketrails. Once on the island, you’ll have dinner and an opening circle to get to know each other. After that, the weekend is yours. You’ll have time and space to do your art and enjoy nature. Meals and snacks are provided during your stay on the island. There is an optional social hour on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, the retreat concludes with brunch. Boats leave the island at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Canadian guests will meet up in Sprague.

How “rustic” is it?

Oak Island is about 10-15 minutes by boat from Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle. Laketrails Base Camp is far from posh, but quite comfortable. Some wi-fi is available. The communal buildings and cabins have electricity, but plan to spend part of your time unplugged. You won’t need to bring your own toilet paper, and no-flush toilets are conveniently located near the “Early Bird” cabin, the “Night Owl” cabin, and the communal spaces. Sleeping cabins have an open-space layout, with bunks and single beds with mattresses. Participants are housed according to their sleeping preference – early bird or night owl. There are showers (which are pretty nice considering) but use water sparingly (or jump in the lake.) There are canoes and a sauna for your enjoyment and lots of glorious nature. It’s an island at the end of the earth — in the best sense!

How “rustic” do I need to be? Must be able to get in and out of a boat and navigate uneven terrain.

Please note that the nearest emergency medical facilities are at least 2 hours away.

Cost: $300.00 USD which includes boat transportation, meals and snacks on the island, lodging, canoes, paddle boats, sauna, campfires, lots of peace and quiet, and beautiful nature.

Register: Fill out the online form below and pay with PayPal or fill out this registration form and mail, along with your deposit or full payment, to: Red Shoes Writing Solutions, 33145 593rd Ave., Warroad, MN 56763.

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is due upon registration. Balance is due by August 7th, 2019. Refunds are at the discretion of Laketrails Base Camp and Red Shoes Writing Solutions. If you have any questions, contact Kim Hruba, kim@redshoeswriting.com or (218) 469-0204.

North Beach Writer’s retreat

Join other writers in beautiful Park Rapids, MN from June 26-30 for a poetry writing retreat and workshop.  You will have a chance to write, reflect, improve your craft, and work with visiting writer Heid Erdrich.

The deadline has been extended, and will be open until all spots are filled.  Two spots are left for those who need lodging and two spots are left for local writers who don’t need lodging.  All the details are at https://northbeachwritersretreat.com

North Beach Writers’ retreats

Poetry, with visiting writer Heid Erdrich: June 26-30, 2019

Memoir, with visiting Writer Ko Kalia Yang: August 20-24, 2019

Application deadline: April 15, 2019 (Poetry), June 15 (Memoir)

Where: Nestled in the heart of the Park Rapids lakes area, the North Beach Writers’ Retreat is located on the property of the North Beach Resort. During free time, attendees have access to the entire resort, which includes a sandy swimming beach on beautiful Potato Lake, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, volleyball nets, canoes, and kayaks. The resort is located only a short drive from Minnesota’s oldest state park, Itasca, where you can walk across the headwaters of the Mississippi River and spend time in one of the few areas of original timber in the state. Hiking trails, bike and kayak rentals, scenic drives, and two beautiful interpretive centers await visitors to Itasca State Park.

The week will include morning sessions consisting of craft talks and a daily writing prompt, the results of which may be shared on a voluntary basis the following morning. After lunch, participants will have the afternoon to write, reflect, take advantage of the lake and resort amenities, get a massage or take a yoga class, have a personal consultation with retreat leaders LouAnn Muhm (poetry) or Tanya Miller (memoir), and/or attend an optional afternoon session in which writers will present a poem or excerpt to the group for  workshopping.

While the cabins will be quiet spaces for writing, there are plenty of outside areas and a community room for impromptu conversations with other writers, including the workshop leaders, LouAnn Muhm and Tanya Miller, who will be onsite and available throughout the week.

The visiting writers, accomplished Minnesota writers Heid E. Erdrich and Kao Kalia Yang, will conduct one afternoon and one morning session, and give an evening reading, followed by an open mic reading of participants and a book signing.

The goal has been to find a good balance between structured time in workshops and unstructured time to write, relax, and reflect.  The afternoons can be somewhat shaped by the wishes of the group, once we’ve met and discussed.
