Artists of Northwest Minnesota Booklet is Available

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is pleased to announce that the 4th edition of our Artists of Northwest Minnesota booklet is available for retail locations and others who are interested. This is a marketing booklet that will be distributed throughout our region.

The booklet includes information about a variety of creative people and artists, including visual artists, dancers, bands, musicians, performing artists, and theater directors, editors, writers and fine crafters. The booklet helps those who are listed reach out to the general public and is a means to help the public “get in touch with them” to purchase art, book them, or have them provide a service.

Arts organizations, dance studios, stores with local art, local suppliers of supplies and materials for artists, coffee shops that have open mic or live bands often, etc. are included in the back of the booklet.

Please let us know if you would like copies to distribute or for yourself. To view the booklet online click here.

4th Annual Artists Retreat on Lake of the Woods

You’re invited to the 4th Annual Artists Retreat on Lake of the Woods!

Come out to Laketrails Base Camp on Oak Island for a weekend of rest, relaxation, and art. This rustic island is the perfect getaway to rejuvenate and reconnect with your work.

When: September 6-9, 2018

The Plan: Meet up in Warroad, MN on Thursday and carpool from there. When you get to Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle, you’ll take a boat out to Laketrails. Once on the island, you’ll have dinner and an opening circle to get to know each other. After that, the weekend is yours. You’ll have time and space to do your art and enjoy nature. Meals and snacks are provided during your stay on the island. There is an optional social hour on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, we conclude the retreat with a closing circle at 10:00 a.m. followed by brunch, leaving the island around noon.

For Canadian guests, the meet up will be in Sprague.

Don’t forget! To reach the Northwest Angle, we must travel through Canada. Bring a passport or passport card. Only one of these documents is required to cross the Canadian and U.S. borders. Canadians will need a passport as well to enter the United States at the Northwest Angle.

How “rustic” is it?

Oak Island is about 10-15 minutes by boat from Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle. Laketrails Base Camp is far from posh, but quite comfortable. There is some wi-fi and the communal buildings and cabins have electricity, but plan to spend part of your time unplugged. You won’t need to bring your own toilet paper, and no-flush toilets are conveniently located near the men’s cabin, women’s cabin and the communal spaces. Cabins have an open-space layout, with bunks and single beds with mattresses. There are showers (which are pretty nice considering) but use water sparingly (or jump in the lake.) There are canoes and a sauna for your enjoyment and lots of glorious nature. It’s an island at the end of the earth — in the best sense!

How “rustic” do I need to be?

Must be able to get in and out of a boat and navigate uneven terrain.

Please note that the nearest emergency medical facilities are at least 2 hours away.

What to pack: Sleeping bag or linens, pillow, two flashlights, comfortable clothing, good sturdy shoes (2 pairs recommended), swimsuit, alcoholic beverages for social hour (optional) and supplies for your art.

Cost: $300.00 USD which includes boat transportation, meals and snacks on the island, lodging, canoes, paddleboats, sauna, campfires, lots of peace and quiet, and beautiful nature. A $100 nonrefundable deposit due at time of registration with balance due by August 7th, 2018.

Register by May 1st and save $50!

Register: Go to www.redshoeswriting.com. Fill out the online form and pay with PayPal or download the registration form and mail, along with your deposit or full payment, to: Red Shoes Writing Solutions, 33145 593rd Ave., Warroad, MN 56763.
