Artists of Northwest Minnesota Promotional Booklet — Submit your application Today!

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 10!

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is updating our Artists of Northwest Minnesota booklet and will be printing 3,000 copies of our 5th edition this winter. This is a marketing booklet that will be distributed throughout our region.

We are looking for a variety of creative people and artists to provide information for this booklet, but we’d love to include bands, musicians, performing artists, or writers. The cost for a listing for individuals is $20. In addition to the listing you will receive 20 booklets, which makes the listing practically free!  The booklet helps those who are listed reach out to the general public and is a means to help the public “get in touch with them” to purchase art, book them, or have them provide a service. The booklet will include visual artists, fine crafters, performing artists like musicians, dancers, actors, creative writers, fine art photographers, creative videographers, serious graphic artists, interior design artists, landscape artists, journalists, screenwriters, history writers, editors, artistic architects, very unique artsy floral designers, theater directors, choreographers, accompanists, bands, folk musicians, and more.

While our approach will be inclusive, criteria will be applied related to selection.  Things like tattoo, taxidermy, kit crafters, pre-existing patterns from a book crafters, and purchased ceramics that are just painted don’t fit as nicely unless they are over the top excellent in technique or if they are preserving a fine artistic tradition like Rosemaling, for instance. Please contact us if you have questions.

Arts organizations, dance studios, stores with local art, local suppliers of supplies and materials for artists, coffee shops that have open mic or live bands often, etc. will be included in the back of the booklet.

If you would like to be listed, please print out an entry form, fill it out and mail to us. Here is the form:

There is also an entry form for businesses. It also costs $20 for businesses/groups that want to have a logo or picture in the booklet. Here is the form for businesses: NWMAC Groups Application form 2017 edition.

We are also considering briefly listing very artistic local festivals in this edition. These festivals would need to have a very strong history of existence – since we print every three years + an “arts budget” of a certain amount to qualify.  If you think your festival qualifies and you are interested in being listed, please contact Mara at director@nwartscouncil.org.

Please spread the word to other creative and artistic residents in our region!

Northwest Artist of the Year Award Given to Rob Burkel

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is pleased to announce that Rob Burkel of Thief River Falls has been awarded the Northwest Artist of the Year Award. Burkel is a talented actor in our area.

Artist of the Year Rob Burkel

Rob Burkel has served as Thief River Falls Area Community Theater’s (TRFACT) board President, and directed, produced, acted in numerous theatrical productions in Thief River Falls and the area. He’s also been a TRFACT Radio Readers Theater cast member and a Lincoln High School Speech Team Coach and One Act Play Director. He sits on the Northwest Regional Library Board and has been the force behind bringing the Fargo-Moorhead Opera to Thief River Falls the past 2 years.

According to TRFACT Director Jane Anderson, Burkel is “the backbone of our local theater. His decades of hard work, phenomenal talent and dedication to theater arts, make him truly deserving of this award. In every capacity, Rob is an asset to the theater. Rob’s greatest contribution to the theater is his ability to act and bring characters to life.”

Director Teresa McGriff described Burkel as “one of the most prepared actors I have ever worked with. He’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves and pitch in. He’s a real team player — upstanding but kind and fun as well. People want to be in shows with him because he is fun to work with. Audiences want to come and see him in shows, as well, because he is well-liked and respected. When auditions are held, he is one of the ones I hope to see walking into the room and that is one of the highest compliments a director can give.”

Fellow actor Scott Pream said,” Rob’s insight into his character portrayal is only topped by his willingness to help his fellow actors become the best they can be. He is a great leader willing to help in any way he can.”

When asked about the impact of the arts on individuals or society, Burkel explained that “theater and art are at their best when they force you to think. If forcing you to think makes you uncomfortable, even better. Art should change who you are going forward and make you a better person. There should be a balance between that and fun and silly. There’s a role for humor, too.”

The Northwest Artist of the Year Award is given each year to recognize artists within our seven-county region who stand out in terms of artistry. This award can be given to any discipline artist including visual, performing, or creative writing who are emerging or at a mid-way point in their artistic endeavors. “Of the Year” Award winners were nominated by area residents and comes with a cash award of $500.00. Funding for the Northwest Artist of the Year comes from the McKnight Foundation.

Congratulations, Rob Burkel on being named the Artist of the Year!

City of Viking is Seeking proposals for Art Honoring veterans

The City of Viking, Minnesota, working through a Veteran’s Memorial Committee, will be developing a site to honor their communities’ veterans; past, present and future. They are seeking proposals for art that honors veterans that can be transferred to granite or other material that will withstand our weather. The art will need to either be captured electronically and lazered onto the stone, or etched. Clear uncluttered images are best for transfer. Proposals of other types of art are also welcomed as long as the result would be weatherproof, and large enough to be the centerpiece of our memorial.

Project Description: The vision is to select a site along the main street of Viking, and develop an area to commemorate veterans. The site will include a pathway lined with veteran commemorative bricks, garden and plant area, benches and an art centerpiece. This call is for a proposal for the centerpiece.

Goals: Their goal is to publicly thank their veterans, and give their citizens and visitors a place to contemplate the sacrifices that have been made to maintain freedom, and be exposed to quality art.

The proposal should include the following:

  1. A description of the artwork that is proposed. i.e. pencil drawing of “ ”, mosaic, oil, etc.
  2. The artists proposal for the final piece, i.e. artwork lazered, etched, etc., recommendations on size, if the proposed artwork is the final piece, description of size, etc.
  3. Memorial wording may be included, but is not required. If describing a completed piece, location of wording can be included.
  4. Artist’s proposal for use of the “original” if it is art to be transferred.
  5. Photos of other art pieces completed by the artist, and general qualifications.
  6. Artist’s fees.
  7. Name, address, and phone number.

They are seeking artists who are located in the northwest region of Minnesota. Only Minnesota artists will be considered.

Deadline: Proposals must be received by June 15, 2019.
Address: Proposals must be submitted via email to vikingdiner@mncable.net or mailed to Cheryl Peters, P.O. Box 112, Viking, MN 56760.

Selection Process: The Viking Veterans Memorial committee will seek input from local veterans, citizens and the Viking City Council, and notify all entrants of the selection by July 15, 2019. Please send any requests for additional information to vikingdiner@mncable.net.
