Life got you busy?
Come out to Laketrails Base Camp on Oak Island for a weekend of rest, relaxation, and writing. This rustic island is the perfect getaway to rejuvenate and reconnect with your writing projects and goals.
When: September 18—21, 2014
The Plan: We’ll meet at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Warroad, MN on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and carpool from there. Dinner will be on your own at Jerry’s Restaurant at Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle. Boat leaves for the island at 6:30 p.m. Once on the island, we’ll have an opening circle to get to know each other. After that, the weekend is yours. You’ll have time and space to write and enjoy nature. Meals and snacks are provided during your stay on the island. There will be an optional social hour on Friday and Saturday nights with soft drinks provided. On Sunday, we’ll conclude the retreat with a closing circle at 10:00 a.m. followed by brunch. We plan to leave the island around noon.
How rustic is it? Oak Island is about 10-15 minutes by boat from Young’s Bay Resort at the Northwest Angle. Laketrails Base Camp is far from posh, but quite comfortable. There is some wi-fi and some buildings have electricity, but plan to spend part of your time unplugged. You won’t need to bring your own toilet paper, but there are no-flush toilets conveniently located near the men’s cabin and women’s cabin. There are showers, but use water sparingly (or jump in the lake.) There are canoes and a sauna for your enjoyment and lots of glorious nature and space to wander and write. It’s an island at the end of the earth — in the best sense!
What to pack: Sleeping bag or linens, pillow, flashlight, comfortable clothing, life jacket if you’d like to canoe, swimsuit, alcoholic beverages for social hour (optional). Don’t forget! To reach the Northwest Angle, we must travel through Canada. Bring a passport or passport card. Only one of these documents is required to cross the Canadian and U.S. borders. Please note that the nearest emergency medical facilities are at least 2 hours away.
Cost: $200.00 USD which includes boat transportation, meals and snacks on the island, lodging, canoes, sauna, campfires, lots of peace and quiet, and beautiful nature. Maximum of 15 people.
