Knight Foundation Prototype Grant

ABOUT OUR KNIGHT PROTOTYPE FUND STRATEGY

The Knight Prototype Fund helps media makers, technologists and tinkerers take ideas from concept to demo. With grants of $35,000, innovators are given six months to research, test core assumptions and iterate before building out an entire project.

The program recognizes that with the cost of experimentation dropping, innovators should have the opportunity to test their greatest ideas and explore many options before choosing a final path. When successful projects emerge, Knight Foundation can help them scale.

What types of ideas does the Prototype Fund support?

The Prototype Fund supports a broad spectrum of ideas related to media, data and information. We are interested in any new models or technology to inform communities.

Is there a deadline for the Prototype Fund?

Yes. Applications are accepted on a quarterly basis. Our next deadline is August 1, 2014.

Is the program open to international applicants?

At this time, funding is limited to organizations based in the United States.

What types of funding are available?

The Prototype Fund makes grants to nonprofit organizations, for-profit organization and individuals, for charitable activity (such as open source development, public education, etc.). You can read about our other funding options here.

How much funding will I get if my application is successful?

Successful applicants receive an $35,000 grant for a six-month prototyping period.

What comes next if my application is approved?

New grantees start the Prototype Fund experience with a two-and-a-half day human-centered design and project planning workshop. Over the six-month prototyping period you work independently and check-in with Knight Foundation on your progress. At the end of the six months, grantees are reconvened for a demo day showcasing the research and prototypes.

Next Deadline: August 1, 2014.
