THE GAIA FENNA MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP

Tofte Lake Center will host its sixth annual week-long residency for a Minnesota artist who exemplifies the spirit, passions, and values of artist and nature lover Gaia Fenna. This year’s residency week will be September 14-20, 2020.

For Gaia, physical activity and art were a means of self-expression, self-definition — in her DNA. At Tofte Lake Center, Gaia’s love of art and nature were perfectly combined. She took time each day to commune with her spirit by hiking, biking, and kayaking. She has left her creative fingerprints all over TLC.

INDIVIDUAL ARTIST & GROUP/ORGANIZATION

These residencies are offered for both individual artists, small creative teams, and groups or organizations looking for space and time to connect, create, and reflect together in community and in nature.

Artist residencies are interdisciplinary in nature, and balance group activity, personal work time, facilitated conversation, with the exchange of work and performance. Artists from diverse backgrounds and communities are encouraged to attend. Residencies are structured around the artists’ specific project needs. Days are self-directed, and could include individual/team work, afternoon excursions or on-site activity, dinners and evening gatherings with resident artists.

Tofte Lake Center is family-friendly. For Individual Residencies, artists are welcome to bring their families when space allows and when agreed upon in advance.  For these residencies child-care is not guaranteed, though assistance is offered to help resident artist parents find part-time childcare for their stay, should this make their residency possible.

2020 Individual Artist Residency Weeks Available: June 15-21 (depending on grant funding, this week could be dedicated to our Family Artists Residency Program), June 22-28, June 29-July 5, August 3-9, August 10-16, and September 21-27.

TLC offers residency and retreat opportunities for artistic groups or organizations looking for space and time to connect, create, strategize, plan, and reflect together in community.

If you are interested in hosting a Group or Organizational residency, please contact us at info@toftelake.org between October 1-November 30, 2019 – the earlier the better!

Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists

The online application for the 2017/18 Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists is now open. The deadline for applying is Friday, September 15, 2017, at noon.

Artists considered for these fellowships may work in a variety of visual art media, including both traditional and new media. The program is aimed at visual artists who can present their work in a gallery context, and eligible applicants must be in the early stages of their careers and have not yet attained professional acknowledgment commensurate with the quality of their work. MCAD and the Jerome Foundation welcome applications from artists representing diverse cultural perspectives.

An independent jury of three arts professionals competitively awards five grants of $12,000 each to emerging Minnesota artists. Fellowships may be used to purchase materials, cover the production costs of artwork, and supplement living or travel costs. During the twelve-month fellowship year, each artist receives three studio visits from professional critics, access to technical assistance, a culminating exhibition at the MCAD Gallery, a catalog with a critical essay on each artist’s work, and the opportunity to partake in a public panel discussion.

This program is administered by the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Contact Kerry Morgan, program director, at gallery@mcad.edu or 612.874.3667 for more information.
