CSA Distribution Celebration

First CSA artists
CSA artists at our first distribution event, 11/18/12, at Melody’s Restaurant, Warren, MN.

On Sunday, November 18, 2012, the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council sponsored the meeting of artists and art patrons for our first distribution of Community Supported Art packages. Patrons of the program arrived from around the region for the event which was facilitated by arts council director Mara Wittman at Melody’s Restaurant in Warren, Minnesota.

Patrons had pre-purchased boxes of CSA art by contacting the Arts Council office. The CSA boxes contained artwork created especially for Community Supported Art by participating artists. Each of nine artists made fifty pieces in their medium for the program. The NMAC has coordinated the sale of their works for CSA based on the model of Community Supported Agriculture.

Attending the distribution of their artworks were: fused glass maker Jolene Juhl of Greenbush MN, jewelry maker/artist Paula Kallinen of East Grand Forks MN, photographer Chris Lane of Newfolden MN, printmaker John Charles Cox of Thief River Falls MN, and potter Robin Foster of Red Lake Falls MN. The next phase of distribution will occur in the spring.

Local businesses and artists provided bonus items for the first CSA boxes, including coupons from artist Julie Elick of Roseau, Quilter’s Eden of East Grand Forks, Studio 413 of Ada, and a book from Dale Jacobson.

Artwork in first of two distribution events for 1st annual CSA.

CSA boxes are still available and are suitable for businesses, sharing, splitting with a friend or family member, displaying in an office setting, or gift-giving for the holidays. For more information contact Mara Wittman at 218-745-9111, email her assistant at:, or visit their website at:

Holiday Art Exhibit 2012

The Holidays! What do you imagine when you hear these words? A warm fireside? Your family baking cookies? Teeth-chattering cold on an icy blue day? Many ideas, feelings, thoughts, and pictures come to mind.  Create something new for our upcoming Holiday exhibit, or bring in something from recent years that relates to the Holidays theme.  Only one piece per person, please.

All work must be completed and dropped off by November 8th at noon at our office in Warren or November 12th in East Grand Forks at our River Walk Centre Mall Gallery between 11 a.m.– 4 p.m.

If you submit a three-dimensional piece please bring the support system or case for its secure display.  Poetry or prose should be displayed within a black frame.  Visual art can be in any color or style of frame.  We will create an exhibit catalog for the show and hold an opening night reception in late November (date TBA).

All ages may enter artwork.  We reserve the right to not accept artwork if it does not meet the standards of the show.  Work may not be larger than 3 feet square due to space limitations.  This is an annual exhibit theme, so join the tradition!

Artists may receive partial reimbursement of their travel costs, if that is a hardship.  If you wish to try and sell your piece,  you may price it, include your contact information, and arrange your own sale.

Please put your name and contact information on the back of your artwork before you drop it off.  When you drop off your piece, you will need to complete an entry form, so we have your contact information on record. We will also record your brief statement about why you think your piece should be part of “The Holidays” exhibit.

At the end of the exhibit, all pieces must be picked up by January 14, 2013.

If you have questions, contact mara or therese, or call 218-745-9111.

Artist of the Year Awards Feb 29 deadline

The last day in February is not only Leap Day but the day to submit nominations for our Artist of the Year awards.  This is a great time to honor an outstanding life-long active artist in your area.  Think about it.  Who always performs their own music, does the choreography for the dance troupe, acts in the play, creates poetry, does storytelling at the library, paints the local mural, etc.  I can think of so many talented individuals in our area, but I can’t put forward the nomination.  Only you can do that!  It is a wonderful honor to be chosen, just ask our past recipients.

Only one person needs to submit the nomination form, available on our website and then a few others need to send in support letters.

Two individuals will be recognized at our visual art reception in Kennedy on May 6, 2012.
