The Northwest Regional Arts Council Regional Exhibition in Fosston is the source of eleven pieces of impressive artwork for our annual Traveling Mini Art Exhibition. The Traveling Exhibit is visiting six libraries throughout Minnesota’s northwest region during the next few months, bringing paintings, photography, drawings, pastel, prints, and clay sculpture. Seven of the artworks bound for local libraries are award winning pieces selected by the show’s juror, Natalia Himmirska of Bemidji.
Artists whose work is included in the mini exhibition are (adult artists): Irene Bertils, Allie Carl, Bert Foster, Janet Johnson, Bernie Wilebski; and (student artists): Chandler Blanton, Hillary Cudmore, Alissa Fife (2 items), Jackie Lee, Kaley Quanrud, and Haley Warnecke.
The exhibit has been to the Northwest Regional Library branches in Thief River Falls and Hallock, and is now open for viewing at the Crookston Library. The Traveling Mini Art Exhibit will be open to the public at the following libraries during regular hours on the following dates:
The annual regional exhibit of juried art at the Fosston Library Arts Center ended Sunday, April 21st with the awarding of Artist of the Year and Arts Advocate of the Year at the Awards Reception for artists. Featuring 130 original works of art by 95 adult and student artists from the seven counties of northwest Minnesota, the creations on display included watercolor, oil, and acrylic paintings; charcoal and pencil drawings; crayon works; sculpture; ceramics; photography; mixed media, and more.
The Northwest Star Artist Award was received by Jane Anderson of Thief River Falls for her decades of volunteered talent with Thief River Fall’s community theater. Jane performed two numbers for Sunday’s program to rousing applause.
Ric Sorenson of Fosston received the Arts Advocate of the Year Award in absentia. His wife, Bernadette, accepted the award on his behalf. Ric contributed to the arts community for forty years as a teacher, regional arts council member, and state arts advocate.
Prizes awarded included first place in adult category to Rock Bakken of Hallock for his painting of horses “Power and Glory.” Bakken also received the People’s Choice award in the adult category.

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council has been sponsoring an on-going workshop for artists of all media from Springboard for the Arts titled Work of Art: the business of art. This month, the participating artists brought samples of their work for an exhibition in the NWMAC gallery at River Walk Artists in East Grand Forks.

Student Showcase includes acrylic paintings, charcoal drawings, watercolor paintings, and oil paintings by students in grades ten through twelve, taught by teachers Deb Aune (GMR) and Erin Nelson (EGF), who both exhibited their work here last summer together.
Subject matter ranges from wild animals to self-portraits, and a few floral impressions as well. The students’ mastery of simple graphite and charcoal captures contrasts in animal dispositions, while bright colors exude floral and facial expressions.
The exhibit Student Showcase will be available for public viewing until April 14th. Located in the River Walk Centre in East Grand Forks, the gallery is within the River Walk Artists gallery, 211 Demers Avenue. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday 2 p.m. to 8 p.m, and Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The second distribution event of Community Supported Art is Sunday, March 17, 2013. Final pieces of artwork will be available to purchasers of shares at a meet-and-greet with the artists at Melody’s Cafe in Warren, Minnesota.

New artwork at this event are lino-cut prints by Jeanne O’Neil of East Grand Forks; matted and framed, Hardanger embroidery by Renee Jensen of Stephen; and etched/printed self-portraits by John Leopold of Thief River Falls.
